This November, Cinephile Paradiso invites you to watch and celebrate the 60th anniversary of John Ford’s acclaimed American Western, The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance.
Starring James Stewart and John Wayne (together for the first time), alongside Vera Miles, Lee Marvin, and Lee Van Cleef, The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance tells the story of a senator (Stewart), his old friend (Wayne), and a loathsome outlaw who terrorizes them called Liberty Valance (Marvin). Through flashback, the senator tells his story of first coming to town, the gang that terrorizes it, a love triangle, all while the question remains: who was the man who shot Liberty Valance?
Upon release, The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance became one of the highest grossing films of 1962. The film questions the mythology of the West and subverts it by representing a grittier and less romanticised portrait of the frontier. Ironically, this romantic vision is deconstructed by both John Ford and John Wayne, the godfathers of the American Western.
